Making Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

We recently attended a game convention that required masks for all attendees.
I wanted some new masks made with fabric that fit the theme.
The cut away triangles are so cute!
I made a dozen new masks. Not that we needed that many for a weekend event. Dice, beholders, potions, dragons, gelatinous cubes, and rainbow vomiting cats. Fabrics from Spoonflower.
Then we popped them into the wash so they would be clean for our convention.

I wrote my own tutorial for these masks. You can find out more about the design on my post How I Mask. Stay safe out ...

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

It seems the masks we've been wearing for almost a year are starting to show their age. I wanted some novelty prints so I convinced my husband to take me to the big-box fabric store to pick up some licensed prints. Maybe no one needs a mask with Pokémon or Avengers but I wanted some. I also pulled that cut cat print out of my collection.
These are going to be so much fun!
As usual, I have cut out way to many of these. Oh, well, they are still good to share with friends.

If you want to ...

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

A friend asked for some more masks so I grabbed some fabrics and got cutting. Lining and outer pieces cut and ready to go. Now, where did I leave those adjustable ear bands?
I searched and searched and couldn't find them. I ended up having to do some tidying to find them. They were somewhat buried in the piles of creativity I have on my cutting table. I didn't have to dig very deep after all. That cutting table is still a mess.
These masks are really easy to cut with quilting rulers and your rotary cutter. You ...

How I Mask from Becca's Crazy Projects

I've noticed more views on my mask posts so I wanted to share how I make them. This is nothing new, you can find this design in many places, including YouTube, and on other blogs, by using the search "3D mask". The main difference here is that I am a quilter so I will show you how to do it using quilter's tools. Referenced tools included at the bottom of the post with links to buy your own (these are affiliate links and I may receive a small - think pennies - compensation for pointing you to the listings on ...

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

I had to order some more ear-bands to keep making masks.
I cut a bunch of panels and stitched them up.
In the end, and this isn't the end, I ended up with so many masks. I'm sure I'll be able to find them good homes. A friend pointed out I have one for every mood. I would say so!

If you want to see how I make these I'm drafting a photo tutorial for Friday's post. This isn't a new design and if you don't want to wait you can check out ...

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

After trying the 3D style masks my Darling Husband asked for a few more.
I pulled out some fun novelty prints and got cutting.
Cut, sew, turn, press, sew, press, sew, sew.
I cut out more than I needed and only finished these five. I'll likely sew up some more through the week. Little successes are a great way to build yourself up. And your collection of masks.

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

Since this has become our favorite style of mask I decided it was time to make some more. I even experimented by making a larger version (the beer bottles one is supersized).
This pup peeking from the edge is so much fun! This mask is cut completely with rotary cutting tools (rotary cutter, rulers, mat) and is all straight-line sewing. Super simple construction, too.

Aizenkobo Indigo Face Masks from The Ardent Thread

Here’s my fashion tip of the season: Wear a damn mask.

Yes, I’m being harsh. Why? Because I live in a region where masks are mandatory and I support that decision by our local government. If you want to debate the merits of going maskless, please don’t bother. I will remove your comment. I already know too many people who have had to deal with the long term effects of COVID-19 and several of my friends have lost family members to the virus.

There are three of us living in this big, old house and we each ...

Halloween Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

And you thought the mask sewing was over with.

Darling Husband has said more than once he wanted a mask that had more coverage than the fitted masks I made a couple months ago. I made a sample last month and he has already lost it. It was time to make some more. I pulled out some fun Halloween prints and got cutting. These are made using one of the 3D patterns out there. I used the adult size from this Martelli Notions YouTube. I don't use the Martelli system but they include the sizes on the video. I ...

Sakura Cherry Blossoms Face Mask from Selvage Blog

This gorgeous fabric by Moda is called Sakura, which means cherry blossoms in Japanese.
I think it makes a stunning face mask because it looks like rosy cheeks.
I love the color and the soft flower petals.
This was a purchase yesterday at my favorite quilt shop: The Quilted Ewe in New Hartford, CT.

Custom Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

Another quilter asked if I could make a pair of custom masks for a bride and groom. I said yes.

First, I used the machine's built-in fonts to design the embroidery and make it the size I needed. I then learned about poor embroidery alignment on pre-cut fabric and how my embroidery thinks I want one color when I want another. It was a good test.
Then, I got it right on the second time. I even managed to get it similarly lined up on the second mask.
Different lining for yet another visual indication of who each belongs ...

Just listed today: Scales of Justice face mask for lawyers, judges, magistrates, legal assistants, etc.  Perfect for office or court. Available for purchase here

Made from 3 layers of fine quality quilter's cotton fabric. Because there are 3 layers, you won't need to bother with filters which may shift or bunch up. Less hassle and expense too.

Gentle but effective nose wire prevents gaps (and steaming up of glasses). Make it just right, you won ...

Adjustable Face Mask in 3 Easy Steps from Mulberry Patch Quilts

So after making so many, many face masks to donate to clinics, friends, and family, you quickly realize that one size does NOT fit all. Not only are there different size heads, but even the distance from the mask to the ears is different from one person to another.

After doing some experimenting, I’ve come up with a way to make a face mask adjustable by adding 3 easy steps.

START WITH MY INSTRUCTIONS for making a rectangular, pleated style mask HERE, from my previous blog post.

To make this pattern adjustable, you’ll need two lengths of 1 ...

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

Every time I think I have made enough masks I realize my work isn't done.

No matter how many I make I continue to find fabrics that are just too much fun and friends and family who need more masks.
I use the free mask pattern from Craft Passion. I want to keep the Halloween prints for myself.
I cut the elastic for medium masks to 7.5" long.
I cut the elastic to 8.5" for large masks. So many fun fabrics.

New Feature: Adjustable Elastic Ear Loops from Selvage Blog

Adding this little stopper-bead to the elastic ear loops is such a great idea. Now my masks can fit every size. The elastic is 1/4" wide and the bead is tiny, so it was tricky threading it through that little hole. The best solution was using a little metal crochet hook. It sounds so simple, but I tried everything before figuring this out! :)
So if you're making masks, maybe give this a try.

More Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

I was asked again to make masks. Mask sewing has been an exhausting endevour for me. At first, it was just really sad. Now, it isn't so sad but still not how I want to spend my creative time all the time.

As an experiment, I timed myself when I made this mask. From start to finish, including pressing, cutting, assembly, and finishing, took about 15 minutes. It doesn't seem like much time, does it? For such a little thing. A little thing that can prevent people from continuing to spread a deadly disease. This is the pattern ...

Victoria Findlay Wolfe's Sharp Stripe Fabric Makes a Stunning Mask from Selvage Blog

I love the color and design of Victoria Findlay Wolfe's Sharp Stripe fabric. If Jackie O. was sailing off the Cape today, she'd be wearing this mask, don't you think? It's a nice combination of classic and modern. Wait, you don't need to wear a mask when you're sailing!
